At the center of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was mostly pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was mainly to look after his flock of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the rustling of the wind through the solo tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, watching over his wards inculcated in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plan.
Tales of wolves prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One morning he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found no beast.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand here on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is tough to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
